Beirut to Jounieh: The Shortest Escape in Lebanon

Everyone in Beirut has a mental list of places to escape to. Most of them require a plan. Jounieh is the one that does not.

The geography

Jounieh sits about 20 kilometres north of Beirut along the coast. Outside peak traffic the drive is twenty to thirty minutes. The town wraps around a bay, with Mount Harissa rising directly behind it — which is why so much of the accommodation there is built to face one direction or the other.

That combination is the whole appeal. You get sea and mountain in the same view, from a place you can reach on an impulse at eleven in the morning.

Why it works for a day, specifically

The economics of a daycation are dominated by travel time. A six-hour session with a ninety-minute drive at each end is not a break — it is a commute with a swim in the middle. Jounieh is close enough that the drive rounds down to nothing.

Compare the alternatives from Beirut:

• Jounieh — 20–30 minutes. Works for a half-day.
• Byblos — 45–60 minutes. Lovely; better as a full day.
• Batroun — 60–75 minutes. Weekend territory.
• The mountains — an hour or more, and a different kind of trip.
• The south coast — the traffic decides, and it usually decides against you.

What a day there looks like

Leave Beirut at 11:30. Check in at noon. Swim, eat, sit on a balcony above the bay for a few hours, shower, and be back in the city by seven with the evening still yours.

That is the entire itinerary, and the fact that it is so unambitious is the point. A daycation is not a trip you plan. It is a Tuesday you rescue.

Where to base yourself

Al Murjan Palace Hotel is in Haret Sakher, near Pasteur Hospital — just off the main coast road on the Beirut side of Jounieh, which shaves a few minutes off the drive. It is a four-star boutique property with 35 rooms, a pool, and views over both the Mediterranean and Harissa.

Getting there

Take the coastal highway north out of Beirut and stay on it. Jounieh is signposted throughout. Traffic is worst on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings — for a daycation you are travelling against the flow, which is another small advantage of going midweek.

The best months

May, June, September and October are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, mild enough to sit outside all afternoon, and quiet. July and August are hotter and busier — still good, but plan around the middle of the day. Winter daycations are underrated if the appeal is the view and a quiet room rather than the pool.
