Anniversaries and Birthdays: The Daycation Version

3 October 2026 · 2 min read

The default way to mark an occasion in Lebanon is dinner. It is also, for most couples, the least imaginative option available: two hours, a set menu, a bill, and home. A daytime booking costs about the same and gives you six.

The basic version

A Junior Suite at $70 or a King Suite at $100 at Al Murjan Palace Hotel, booked for the 12:00–18:00 session. A swim, a long lunch, an afternoon on a balcony above Jounieh bay, and home in the evening.

Set that against a good dinner for two in Beirut and the numbers are close. The difference is that one of them is an afternoon and the other is a table.

Five ways to make it feel like an occasion

  1. Tell the hotel it is one. The single highest-return thing you can do. Hotels are good at this and it costs nothing to mention when you book.
  2. Take the suite, not the standard room. For an ordinary Tuesday the $40 room is the right call. For an anniversary, the extra $30 is the entire point of the day.
  3. Arrive at noon and do nothing until two. The temptation is to fill the session. Resist it. The luxury being purchased here is unstructured time.
  4. Plan one fixed thing. A lunch, or a swim at a particular hour. One anchor, then let the rest drift.
  5. Stay for the light. Late afternoon over the bay, with Harissa behind, is the best part of the day and the part people leave before.

For a birthday with people in it

If the occasion involves more than two, the private rooftop lounge at $100 is the better booking — the whole space for a session, for a group of ten to twenty-five. Arrange catering with the hotel in advance, book the afternoon block, and let it run until six. Add a day room downstairs for $40 if you want somewhere to set up, change, or store things.

Why this works better than it sounds

Occasions get scheduled into evenings because that is when everyone is free, and evenings are the most crowded, most expensive, most rushed part of the week. Moving a celebration into the middle of a day is a small act of rebellion that consistently produces a better one. Nobody is watching the clock for a babysitter. Nobody is driving home tired. The light is better.

Practical notes

  • Book midweek if you can — quieter property, easier drive, better attention from staff.
  • Confirm what is available for lunch when you book, rather than discovering it at 14:00.
  • Bring ID. Even on an anniversary, reception needs it.
  • Arrive at the start of your session. A late arrival on an occasion day is the most annoying kind of late arrival.
